Schwan's Co. is expanding its frozen pizza portfolio with a new line of pre-fired frozen pizza.
Schwan's Co., Bloomington, Minn., has
been manufacturing and distributing
pizzas for more than 52 years. After
decades of experience and a desire to
become the No. 1 undisputed leader in
frozen pizza, the company is taking the
next step toward its goal and launching
a line of pre-fired frozen pizza under its
Hearth & Fire brand.
" In 2019, we decided to challenge
everything we know about pizza, everything
we know about the premium
pizza category and push the limits to
create something new that has never
been done before with frozen pizza, " said
Roberto Rios, chief marketing officer,
Schwan's Co.
Ever since consumers were able to
buy the first frozen pizzas in the 1950s,
the category has exploded into hundreds
of brands, taste profiles, formats
and price points. Frozen pizza sales have
significantly
consumers
are eating more at home and looking to
save money amid a surge in food prices
across the country.
Frozen pizza sales for the 52 weeks
ending Aug. 7 totaled $6.4 billion, a 6.7%
jump from a year ago, according to IRI.
Schwan's Co. is one of the top sellers in
the category with nearly a quarter of sales
valued at $1.1 billion during the period.
" We're hoping to reach consumers
who love pizza and want to enjoy craftquality
pizza, similar to what they would
find at a local restaurant, but who also
seek the convenience of frozen pizza
they can purchase at their grocery store, "
Mr. Rios said.
The pizzas are characterized by their

recipe that's pre-fired to offer a pizzeriaquality
flavor. Schwan's Co. uses a minimum
20-hour-fermented dough that is
flame-fired at more than 1,000˚F to give
a touch of char and crunch to every slice
and vacuum-sealed to preserve its craft
quality. The pizzas come in four varieties:
The Pepperoni, The Margherita, The
Bianca and The Mushroom.
The Pepperoni is topped with a spicy
red sauce, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese
and a Parmesan herb sprinkle. The
Margherita includes a traditional red
sauce, mozzarella slices, basil leaves and
olive oil. The Bianca has Parmesan garlic
cream sauce, mozzarella slices, fontina
cheese, sharp cheddar, goat cheese,
asiago and a pinch of oregano, while The
Mushroom combines gouda, portabella
mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted
shiitake and cremini mushrooms,
crumbled goat cheese, asiago and a
pinch of thyme.
The Margherita and The Bianca flavors
are available for a suggested retail
price of $11.99, and The Pepperoni and
The Mushroom flavors sell for a suggested
retail price of $12.99. The line is
available at select Kroger locations in the
Denver, Chicago, Cincinnati, Phoenix
and Atlanta areas, as well as in the states
of Washington and Oregon. Schwan's
Co. plans to expand distribution of
its new pizzas nationwide in 2023.
Additionally, consumers in 15 states
will be able to purchase the product on
the web at www.hearthandfirepizza.com
for $16.99 per product plus delivery
and shipping.
