Consumers are prioritizing health, according to the
SNAC webinar. More than half said strengthening their
immune system is now a higher priority, and nearly
half said managing stress, improving sleep and eating
healthy are higher priorities.
" Leading the future of snacking means evolving our
portfolio to meet consumers' snacking needs, " said
Dirk Van de Put, chairman and chief executive officer,
Mondelez International Inc., Chicago, in a May conference
call for the release of the company's " 2020 Snacking
Made Right Report " on sustainability. " We do this by offering
a broad range of snacks with an increasing focus
on well-being, and we aim to grow our well-being range
at twice the growth rate of our core business. "
He provided several examples of how the company
will do that, including through acquisitions of brands
focused on well-being, healthier extensions of products
such as a reduced-sugar Cadbury Dairy Milk bar, and
creating new brands supporting wellness and sustainability,
such as using upcycled foods. The company also
plans to increase portion-controlled products to 20% of
revenue by 2025.
Companies with BFY products strive to offer satisfying
foods that their consumers can feel good about eating.
Snack maker HighKey, Orlando, Fla., aims to reduce
sugar in the American diet by selling low-sugar, lowcarb
cookies, candy and more. And the company recently
launched a line of almond-flour crackers in response
to customer requests.
" Our mission is to bring low-carb sugar-sucks comfort
food that tastes as good as the original, " said Joe
Ens, co-chief executive officer of HighKey. " We have
been able to do that by combining a unique set of ingredients
like almond flour and natural sweeteners so that
now consumers can keep the great things they've rediscovered
during the pandemic, but they can get back on
track and not have to compromise on taste. "
Label claims such as gluten-free, organic, non-GMO
and vegan are driving sales, Adrienne Smith, senior food
business reporter at New Hope Network, said during a
presentation at Expo West Virtual Week in May.
" Truly clean snacks are becoming a reality with oneand
two-ingredient guilt-free options, " Ms. Smith said.
Rind Snacks, New York, are a zero-waste one-ingredient
option that use fresh, overripe and rescued fruit
to make chewy fruit snacks that include the fruit's
rind. And the company just launched a crunchy fruit
snack made from apples, oranges and kiwi and are
