Bakers are looking
for HMIs that are
more user friendly
for operators.

He added that many HMIs provide
checklists for the operators to help them set
up machines for whatever the plant is baking
that day, making it easier for new operators to step in.
That includes training workers in several formats, including
in-person and virtual training and using augmented
reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) technologies.
" AR/VR is the way of the future for training, and we've
got to take advantage of that, " Mr. Gunnell said. " We're
working on some training things here where we're isolating
the most important parts of the machine, basically taking
them out of the equipment and making them a standalone
training function. ... By isolating it and removing it from
the overall machine, we're trying to get that focus narrowed
so it's in learnable steps. "
And that's not the only way equipment manufacturers
are looking at making things easier and more user-friendly.
" The most important thing for automation and endof-line
automation specifically is simplifying things, making
things so they're very easy for operators, " said Peter
Fox, senior vice president of sales, North America, Somic
Packaging Inc. " We are also embarking on different ways
of making changeovers very easy if not totally automatic. "
Experts foresee the trend toward packaging automation
will accelerate.
" Automation and minimal touches in a packaging room
will continue to be commonplace and will be enabled by
the complete snack line working in unison from raw material
handling to the finished case, " said Jeff Almond, industry
manager, snack food packaging, Heat and Control.
The search for sustainability
As bakeries and snack manufacturers set ambitious goals
to reduce their carbon footprint, the need for reliable sustainable
packaging grows. Companies are using recyclable
and compostable materials, but they are often in short supply
with supply chain problems, and they are costlier than
standard packaging films.
" How do you get more recycled content in your products
and still be food grade? " asked Adrianne Tipton, chief
technology officer at Novolex. " Down the road we're going
to see a lot more availability of that as advance recycling
comes about, complementing mechanical recycling -
which we do - for other applications. But that's still several

years out. So how do you manage recycled content availability
today in different materials, whether it's recycled fiber,
whether it's recycled PET, any of those? How do you
manage any of those to get to where you need to be in a
food-grade product? "
Companies are testing sustainable materials based on
what their customers want, but the greener materials can
cause problems.
" We have clients who need sustainable films for
some, but not all of their customers, " said Teri Johnson,
vice president, North America, TNA Solutions. " Our
clients' film suppliers are tooled up to make the standard,
traditional baking and snack films, and now these
clients are asking their film suppliers to tool up and do
short production runs of sustainable film, which can
prove costly. There's just not enough momentum yet for
the film companies to fully invest in production lines
for sustainable films. "
Equipment manufacturers are also looking at using less
material by using smaller seals with form/fill/seal machines
and manufacturing more energy-efficient machines as the
definition of sustainable continues to expand.
" Sustainability is jumping back into everybody's discussion, "
Mr. Gunnell said. " It is going to expand beyond the
materials, beyond the obvious things. Things as simple as,
'How much power are you using?' "
Looking down the road a few years, it's clear that there is
plenty of work ahead to get where the industry wants to go.
" Packaging has a tricky decade ahead of it, " Mr. Atkins
said. " The environmentalist side wants fewer packages and
more biodegradable materials. However, the recent effects
from COVID have shown that people are starting to prefer
individually wrapped items for the health and well-being
side of things. "
The packaging industry has introduced several advancements
with several more in development. Companies that
need to automate more, find efficiencies and work toward
greater sustainability will simply need to find the right
combination of tools to help them achieve their goals.
