RECLOSABILITY
If considering
reclosable packaging
for a product,
bakers can test
label-applied films
on their packaging
before committing
to capital investment
or technology
integration.

" In my eyes, the two things that are most important
when it comes to resealability are how quickly does it go
bad and how is that product going to be re-delivered? "
Mr. Gunnell said. " If it's a product that you eat a few and
then you can put it back in your purse or you can keep in
your car and [the packaging] keeps everything together,
that would lend itself to reclosability. "
That being said, it can still be difficult to decide which
type of seal is right for a product.
" Seal tightness, durability, ease of use and cost are all
important considerations when determining which closure
is the best for the job, " Ms. Radloff said. " Consumer
demand is the first consideration to determine which
closure to use, followed then by baker preference. "
Twist ties remain a cost-effective reclosable feature in
her experience while also not using a lot of plastic.
As sustainability becomes a high priority for consumers,
other technology is making it possible to preserve
freshness in new ways and reduce carbon footprints and
plastics in other closure types.
" With a reduction in preservatives and consumers
wanting clean ingredients they can pronounce, bakers
are turning to barrier packaging to increase shelf life, "
Ms. Chandler said. " The challenge is the barrier levels
needed vary and often a variety of solutions need to be
available to meet those needs. "
In the end, knowing which reclosing option is right
comes down to what the baker knows about the product
and its consumers.
" That's going to be baker specific, and that's where
that collaboration with the supplier becomes so important, "
said Ron Cardey, senior vice president of customer

engagement, Kwik Lok. " It's going to be product specific,
line speed specific, the type of packaging - whether it
is poly, and some of them are going to paper - there
are a lot of variables that end up having to be put into
that equation. It really becomes a customized solution
for each and every customer. "
Formost Fuji eliminates some of the capital pressure
of switching to reclosable packaging by providing testing
for companies interested in seeing what that final product
would look like. Bakers can have label-applied films
sent in with their products. The reclosable feature will
then be added to the packaging, and bakers can consider
whether that seal is the right fit without having to jump
immediately into purchasing equipment and integrating
production lines.
Integration without loss
When making the transition to reclosable packaging,
the modification to a production line can be as simple
as adding a foot or so of space. And while the technology
does vary based on the needs of the baker, there
isn't a risk to the speed of a line when adding reclosable
options.
" It should have little to no impact whatsoever, " Mr.
Cardey said. " The machinery that we have designed over
the years has been specifically designed to work at the
speed of the baggers that come before it. "
Mitch Lindsey, senior sales account manager, Burford
Corp., agreed.
" We have not seen anything going through baggers
and slicers that we cannot keep up with on our end
with the closure, " he said. " So right now, the limitations
are upstream. "
All a baker needs to modify their packaging is a little
more room.
" What we see is line space, " Mr. Cardey said. " In bakeries,
we tend to put a whole lot of stuff in as small of
