Light glimmers in dark places

M

Midnight struck on Dec. 31, and many of us let out a
collective sigh of relief. The worst year was over. Right?
Well, in light of how January went, 2021 so far is feeling too much like 2020 2.0. Unsettling civil unrest persists, the economy stands on the edge of a knife, cases of
COVID-19 were rising, and the vaccination campaign for
weeks was only limping along.
Despite all that ails the nation, I find hope every day
covering the baking industry. The stories I hear from you,
the bakers, remind me that it's not all bad out there. I have
been immensely impressed over the past year, hearing
about the great lengths baking executives have taken to
keep their employees safe.
" Our employees tell us they feel safer at work than
they do at home, " said Matt Gabris, vice president, environment, health, safety and security,
Americas, Aryzta, when I spoke to him for
my story on employee safety in the time of
COVID-19 ( " Front and Center " ). I am inspired by the trust that has been established
between management and employees as they
have worked together to stay safe and stay open
in a time of so much division and anxiety.
I was heartened by the statement from Robb
MacKie, president and chief executive officer of
the American Bakers Association, condemning the

attack on the US Capitol as it was unfolding in January.
And while kicking off our new season of Since Sliced
Bread for 2021 about sustainability initiatives in the industry, I can't help but think, " Maybe we're all going to be
OK after all. "
And you seem to feel the optimism too. In our Capital
Spending Survey, sponsored this year by our friends at
BEMA, the numbers appear to confirm what we all have
suspected - that after a year of living in a state of crisis,
the resilient baking industry is optimistic about the future. You are ready to invest in your businesses and bake
more quality products.
The difficulties of 2020 may not have magically disappeared at a stroke of midnight, but neither has the light
this industry shines or the lessons we have learned. As
the new editor of Baking & Snack, I am proud to serve an
industry that stood strong under immense pressure and
cares for its people, whether they are employees, customers or consumers, and one that has the noble cause of providing consumers with delicious food that is good for the
body and good for the soul.
