BBU bolsters commitment
to environmental causes
Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU), Horsham, Pa., has partnered with
1% for the Planet, a global organization focused on accelerating
smart environmental giving. As part of its membership, BBU said
its Arnold, Brownberry and Oroweat organic bread brands will donate 1% of their revenue to support environmental causes that align
with its overall commitment to sustainability and increasing access
to and raising awareness of organic and locally grown foods.
BBU's first collaborative effort through 1% for the Planet involves SeedMoney, a Scarborough, Maine-based nonprofit that
provides grants, crowdfunding opportunities and training to food
garden projects across the country and around the world. Earlier
this year, BBU awarded Spring Planting Grants of $5,000 each to
11 community-grown gardens around the United States to help
community members prep their gardens for the planting season.
BBU said its effort with 1% for the Planet is " a reflection of its
overall commitment to bake breads that honor the beauty of nature by implementing environmentally friendly initiatives to enable a better planet for future generations. "

SNAXPO pushed back to
August 2021
SNAC International, the international trade association for the
snack industry, has moved its SNAXPO trade show and convention to Aug. 22-24, 2021, in Charlotte, NC. The new date supersedes the March 28-30 dates announced earlier this year.
" We are pleased to announce the return of SNAXPO, " said
Elizabeth Avery, president and chief executive officer of SNAC
International. " Industry executives consistently tell us this is one
of the most important events on their calendar, and it was sorely
missed this year. So, we have developed a plan to bring the snack
industry together, safely, in-person to help its companies and its
leaders develop the products, marketing strategies and supply
chain solutions that help them win with consumers. "
SNAC International said the decision to push the trade show
to August from March was developed in close consultation with
local and state public health officials.
" We are optimistic that the public health landscape will look
very different in August versus March of 2021, " Ms. Avery said.
" Accordingly, our plan is to deliver a safe, meaningful and valuable
SNAXPO event. "
SNAXPO 2020 had been scheduled for March 22-24 in
Charlotte, but it was canceled due to a dramatic drop in attendance relating to concerns over the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In Memoriam
Kenneth Klosterman, former chairman and
chief executive officer of Klosterman Baking
Co., Cincinnati, died at the age of 87.
Mr. Klosterman, a third-generation baker, came from a family with a baking history going back to 1848 in Germany. Frank
Klosterman, Mr. Klosterman's great-uncle,
arrived in Cincinnati in 1880 and opened the
French Baking Co.
Klosterman
Ken Klosterman, after succeeding his father, Bernard Klosterman,
as chairman and CEO of Klosterman Baking Co. in 1972, led the
company through years of growth. Sales increased more than 400%,
and the number of employees doubled between 1973 and 1983.
Mr. Klosterman was president of the Variety Bakers of America
and the Ohio Bakers Association. He served on the boards of the
American Bakers Association, The Long Co., the Greater Cincinnati
Restaurant Association and the Cincinnati Convention and Visitors
Bureau. He was inducted into ASB's Baking Hall of Fame in 2011.
Besides baking, magic was another area where he excelled. The
Smithsonian magazine in 1991 published a 10-page article on
Mr. Klosterman and his magic tricks.

In Memoriam
Samuel Campbell III, the longtime leader of
Chattanooga Bakery, Inc., died at his home
on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga. He
was 86.
When Mr. Campbell was 16, his father,
Samuel Henegar Campbell Jr., died, and the
younger Mr. Campbell became involved in
managing Chattanooga Bakery. Mr. Campbell
served for 16 months in the US Army in Fort
Campbell III
Chaffee, Ark. According to family lore, it was Mr. Campbell who
assigned a young and world-famous recruit named Elvis Presley
to serve in Fort Hood, Texas.
In 1958 Mr. Campbell returned to Chattanooga and led the
family business as president until 1991. He continued as chairman until his death.
Chattanooga Bakery was established in 1902 and grew rapidly
after the 1917 introduction of the Moon Pie. The third generation
of the Campbell family to head the company, Mr. Campbell added
new varieties of Moon Pie during his tenure, including the DoubleDecker Deluxe and new flavors, including vanilla and banana. More
recently, a Mini Moon Pie was introduced.
Mr. Campbell was active in industry affairs, including the Biscuit
and Crackers Manufacturers' Association, where he was an officer, and
the American Bakers Association. He was president of the Southern
Cookie Bakers Association and the Tennessee Bakers Association.
