Bakers respond to employee
and community needs

BBU reopens plant to meet
increased demand
Bimbo Bakeries USA, Horsham, Pa., a subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo
SAB de CV, Mexico City, is temporarily reopening its Stroehmann
baking plant in the Valmont Industrial Park in West Hazleton,
Pa. The plant will be open at least through Labor Day to accommodate increased demand for bread caused by the coronavirus
(COVID-19) pandemic.
The plant employed 157 when it was closed in September 2019.
At the time, BBU said it would be more efficient to redistribute
production to other bakeries in its system. Now, the facility will
bake bread and buns.
The baking plant opened in the mid-1950s as a Spaulding
Bakeries facility. Stroehmann bought the plant in 1982, and BBU
subsequently attained it in 2008 as part of its acquisition of the US
fresh bakery business of Weston Foods, Inc.

Flowers' Alexander elected
new ABA chair
Bradley Alexander, chief operating officer of
Flowers Foods, Inc., Thomasville, Ga., has been
elected chair of the American Bakers Association
(ABA). Mr. Alexander was elected during ABA's
first-ever virtual All Membership Meeting.
Other officers elected include Cordia
Harrington, chief executive officer, The Bakery
Alexander
Cos., Nashville, Tenn., as first vice chair; William Quigg, president, Richmond Baking, Richmond, Ind., as second vice-chair;
and Brian LeComte, treasurer, Gold Medal Bakery, Fall River,
Mass., who will continue as ABA treasurer.
"Brad is no stranger to ABA, having been involved with this organization longer than anyone on our staff, which is saying a lot,"
said Robb MacKie, president and CEO of ABA. "We understand
his tenure as chair is starting during an unprecedented time and
know he will help expertly guide us as we navigate new territory."

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has unfolded in stages
for food and beverage processors.
The initial stages involved keeping manufacturing plants open
and product moving to meet significant demand increases at retail. Now many companies are rewarding front-line employees
for their efforts and seeking new employees to support the elevated pace of demand.
The J.M. Smucker Co., Orrville, Ohio, paid a one-time
"hardship award" of $1,500 to about 5,700 of its employees in
manufacturing, distribution and other functions. The company
also is providing 12 weeks of full pay and benefits continuation for employees whose manufacturing or distribution facility is closed or whose roles cannot be performed due to the
COVID-19 outbreak.
"We understand the uncertainty people are feeling right now
and are committed to do our part to ease some of that concern
by supporting our employees and communities while ensuring people and pets have access to a steady supply of food,"
said Mark Smucker, president and chief executive officer
of Smucker.
PepsiCo, Inc., Purchase, NY, paid employees of PepsiCo North
America and PepsiCo Foods an incremental $100 per week for
full-time workers in April. And like Smucker, PepsiCo employees who work at a facility that must close will receive 100% of
their pay for up to 12 weeks, and employees who are impacted by
school and daycare closings will receive a minimum of two-thirds
of their pay for up to 12 weeks.
Mondelez International, Inc., Deerfield, Ill., temporarily gave
a $2 per hour pay increase to its manufacturing, distribution
and sales hourly workforce based on hours worked per week.
The company also paid a $125 per week bonus to
sales representatives.
Toufayan Bakeries, Ridgefield, NJ, is providing enhanced pay
for front-line employees and donating to foodbanks across the
country in response to the pandemic. One of the oldest familyrun bakeries in the United States, Toufayan has donated hundreds
of cases of products to food banks and hospitals in New Jersey,
New York and Massachusetts.
Other food companies are supporting communities through
philanthropic efforts as well. Nestle SA, Vevey, Switzerland, entered a partnership with the International Federation of the Red
Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to donate food, medical nutrition products and bottled water to people in need. The
company said it also will use available logistical capacities from
its out-of-home business to support the needs of the IFRC in various countries.
The Kellogg Company, Battle Creek, Mich., has donated food
and funds totaling $5 million for food relief efforts.
