Utz adds Kitchen Cooked
potato chips to its portfolio
Utz Quality Foods, Hanover, PA, acquired Kitchen Cooked, Inc., a
Farmington, IL-based manufacturer and distributor of snack foods.
The acquisition will bring the Kitchen Cooked line of potato
chips, tortilla chips, popcorn, pretzels, pork rinds, Kettle Kurls,
Kettle Pops and more to Utz's portfolio. Additionally, the transaction includes the Kitchen Cooked direct-store delivery and manufacturing operations.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to add this important snack food brand and set of capabilities to our portfolio,"
said Dylan Lissette, CEO of Utz Quality Foods. "Kitchen Cooked
brings a strong consumer following and unique craft heritage in
its core markets. Their distribution and manufacturing capabilities, along with their customer relationships, enhance our ability
to grow our Utz brand portfolio further west."
Founded in the 1930s, Kitchen Cooked distributes its snacks
across central Illinois and eastern Iowa. The company operates
two manufacturing facilities, one in Farmington and another in
Bushnell, IL, which the company plans to shutter over the next
several months as production moves out of the facility.

ADM unveils new corporate
identity, acquisition
Archer Daniels Midland Co., Chicago, unveiled an updated
corporate identity, brand mark and website to reflect its recent
evolution, including divestitures, acquisitions and investments.
"ADM's ongoing evolution provides us with an opportunity
to evolve our purpose and identity aligned to the role we play in
an ever-important industry," said Juan Luciano, chairman and
CEO of Chicago-based ADM.
Meanwhile, ADM acquired the Brazilian company
Yerbalatina Phytoactives, which makes plant-based extracts
and ingredients.

Sukh Bassi, PhD, longtime executive at MGP
Ingredients and Manildra Group, died Jan.
14. He was 78 years old.
Born in Kericho, Kenya, in 1941,
Dr. Bassi came to the US in 1963. In 1981,
he joined MGP as chief microbiologist.
Four years later, he was promoted to vicepresident of research and development and
Bassi
corporate technical director. From 1990 to 1999, he also managed the company's wheat protein sales and marketing activities. He was named vice-president of new product innovations
in 2002 and chief science officer in 2004. In 2007, he was named
vice-president of scientific affairs. Dr. Bassi is listed as the chief
inventor or inventor on numerous patents awarded to MGP for
work in creating new protein and starch innovations, applications and processes.
In 2013, Dr. Bassi left MGP to join the Manildra Group, where he
was named vice-president of technology development and scientific affairs. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing various research and development projects, collaborating with industry and
academic partners internationally, and representing the company
in its relationships with industry organizations and governmental
agencies. His son, Neal Bassi, is president of Manildra Group.
Dale Putman, longtime executive with Metz Baking Co. and
Interstate Bakeries Corp. (IBC), died Dec. 15. He was 92
years old.
He began his career as the manager of the Credit Bureau of
Sioux City, IA, before joining Metz Baking Co. in Sioux City in
1953 as legal counsel and corporate secretary. He later became
president and COO of Metz, positions he held until joining IBC
as COO in 1976. In 1977, he was named president of IBC, and
three years later he added the title of CEO. He resigned his positions in April 1984, though he continued as a member of the
company's board of directors and in a consulting role for the
next several months. At the same time, Mr. Putman stepped
down as chairman of the board of trustees of the American
Institute of Baking (now AIB International) and as a member of
the International Baking Industry Exposition Committee.
Robert Whann III, the longtime chairman of GH Leidenheimer
Baking Co., New Orleans, died Dec. 5. He was 80 years old.
Mr. Whann joined Leidenheimer in 1966. The company was
established 123 years ago by Mr. Whann's grandfather, George
Leidenheimer, an immigrant from Germany. The company's product line features a range of specialty baked foods, including the
po-boy sandwich loaf.
Mr. Whann was chairman of the company from 1972 until
2005. He was a founding member and served for many years on
the board of the Independent Bakers Association. His son, Robert
(Sandy) Whann IV is the current president of Leidenheimer.
