With a century of history in the rear-view
mirror, BEMA sets its sights on the future.
Its been quite a year for BEMA. Capping off the 100th anniversary
during its annual convention held June 19-23 in Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico, the association got down to business to ensure strength
in the supply chain for years to come. With more than 200 attendees including 30 baker guests and their families, the convention
covered issues ranging from overarching food trends to bakery
A panel of donut producers discussed the latest trends and, a
diverse sweet goods panel dived into operational challenges for
a variety of products. The global landscape is top of mind for the
baking industry, and Maria Carolina Gollo, innovation/global
marketing for Grupo Bimbo, Mexico City, provided insight on the
top trends happening in Latin America, and a third baker panel
discussed overarching bakery trends in the Chinese marketplace.
For the fourth year in a row, BEMA Connect brought baker
guests together for a series of 15-minute business meetings with
BEMA members. Now a staple of the convention, this "speed networking" event strategically pairs bakers with suppliers based on
information bakers provide in advance.
During its first-ever "BEMA Gives Back" event, members, bakers and their families filled 75 backpacks for Liga Mac, built 11
bunk beds and cribs for Casa Hogar, decorated 80 pairs of shoes
for children and senior citizens on behalf of Tree of Hope, and assembled and painted 36 math boards for CIME.
Kicking off BEMA's 101st year, Paul Lattan, publisher, Baking &
Snack and 2018-19 BEMA chairman, issued a call for increased
member participation to strengthen the industry. "We, along with
our diverse group of baker guests, are the keepers of the supply
chain," he said. "And there is no greater role than that."
Looking ahead, BEMA is focused on plans for the 2019
International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE), which it coowns. IBIE will be held Sept. 7-11, 2019, in Las Vegas.
