in Deloitte's report, Amazon is "bigger and more powerful than ever. It continues to enter new markets, expand product categories and test new technologies and
concepts, leaving a path of disruption in its wake." The
company ranked No. 186 in the list of retailers in 2000.
According to the study, in 2016, it sat in the No. 6 spot.
Not only is Amazon Prime becoming an American
mainstream retailer, but its food shopping appeal has
also expanded. In 2016, it started Treasure Truck, a
service that includes 33 vehicles in 30 major cities
in the US and UK. The trucks travel the city offering
Amazon app users daily deals and new products. "It's
a blending of channels that matches the best of both,"
said Christina Bowden, senior director of consulting,
The Hartman Group. "You're taking the convenience of
online shopping but also turning that into a fun experience that consumers can go out and join and discover
something new."
In 2016, the company also developed Go, a grocery
store located in Seattle that allows consumers to purchase products without using a cashier or checkout
station. Additionally, Amazon added meal kits to its
purchasing options to keep up with grocery stores partnering with meal kit companies.
But the biggest gamechanger might have been
Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods last year, giving it
access to about 450 locations throughout the US. Since
then, other retailers have begun seeking out a greater
web presence - the majority partnering with Instacart
for same-day grocery delivery. Instacart's list of partnerships continues to grow, adding H-E-B, Wegmans,
Stop & Shop, Aldi, Albertsons, Price Chopper and Sam's
Club and expanding its total to 170 retailers, according

to Euromonitor International. Shipt, another US online
grocery company, was acquired by Target last year and
includes 70 retailers such as Meijer and Harris Teeter.
Walmart is also working to ramp up its Grocery Online
service.
To specifically combat the Amazon effect, brick-andmortars are incorporating "click and collect" features,
which merge digital, experiential and convenience. This
channel provides an advantage over Amazon by selling items that can't be shipped or aren't carried by the
company.
From 2017 to 2018, Euromonitor International recorded that the number of click-and-collect locations
increased from about 1,100 to 2,000 for Walmart, from
1,000 to more than 1,500 for Kroger, from less than
100 to 1,000 for Target and from about 100 to 500 for
Albertsons. Even farmers markets are incorporating the
click-and-collect method. Mr. Donnan described how
he orders a specific blend of coffee, which is brought to
the next farmers market for him to pick up. "That's click
and collect at a personal level," he said. "The combination of endless aisles and low-cost pickup makes this
channel very promising."
Although online grabs only about 2% of grocery
shopping sales dollars, that percentage still greatly affects brick-and-mortar companies, and it's increasing
rapidly. In fact, online grocery shopping is predicted to
engage 70% of consumers by 2022 or 2024, according
to "Digitally Engaged Food Shopper," a report by Food
Marketing Institute and Nielsen.
Ms. Bowden sees millennials, specifically millennial
parents, leading the way. "Online might enable them
to even get to that smaller local bakery item they might
