He focused on hiring people who shared his commitment to quality and service. "It's not just about me.
If I don't have people who embody quality and service,
the company isn't going to be successful. And finding
those people is not easy. You have to keep searching
until you do."
Mr. Miller found those people through recruiters as
well as by promoting from within. Some employees have
been working for Miller Baking Co. for 20 to 30 years
and were hired by his father. When Mr. Miller took over
the company, he recognized leadership capabilities in
some of the employees, invested in them and promoted
them. One of the current shift managers started out as a
route driver 20 years ago.
"Our HR manager started out in customer service
with my dad 25 years ago," he said. "We recognized her
