Note of Trans Fat
Governments outside the United States are also
focusing on trans fat.
Canada: A trans fat task force will
assess the risks and benefits associated with
alternatives to trans fats. Sometime this fall, the
task force should provide recommendations for
an appropriate regulatory framework and for
the introduction of healthy alternatives to limit
trans fat content to the lowest levels possible in
processed foods sold in Canada.
Denmark: The country introduced restrictions
on trans fat in 2003. Oils and fats containing
more than 2% trans fatty acids are forbidden in
foods.
France: The government's food standards
agency, Agence Francaise de Securite Sanitaire des
Ailments, commissioned a report on trans fat that
suggested trans fatty acids should not exceed 1 g
per 100 g of the product as consumed.
Israel: According to an article that ran
in the Jerusalem Post in February, the Israeli
health ministry will give manufacturers and
importers two years to label trans fatty acids.
